Dr. John Peters is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon specializing in skin cancer, reconstructive surgery, medical dermatology, and laser medicine. A native of Clarks Summit, PA, he earned his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College. He served in the United States Navy, completing his dermatology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego and serving as Chairman of Dermatology at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.
After 13 years of military service, he completed a fellowship in Mohs Surgery and Cosmetic & Laser Dermatologic Surgery at SkinCare Physicians in Boston, mentored by Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown faculty. Dr. Peters has authored over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters and is a recognized speaker at national and international meetings.
Mohs surgery is a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer by removing thin layers of cancer-containing skin until only cancer-free tissue remains. It is highly effective, offering the highest cure rate for many skin cancers, including basal and squamous cell carcinoma. Mohs surgery is crucial in dermatology because it completely removes cancerous cells while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible, leading to better cosmetic outcomes and reducing the likelihood of cancer recurrence.
