Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that can make patients feel self-conscious about the appearance and unique characteristics of their skin. WHAT TYPE OF ROSACEA DO I HAVE?

Rosacea comes in several forms and can manifest in different ways. Many patients are diagnosed with erythrotelangiectatic rosacea and experience classic signs of the condition, which include facial redness and obvious blood vessels. Patients who experience rosacea that creates pimple-like bumps may have what is called papulo-pustular rosacea. A frustrating side-effect of this condition is enlarged pores, which are difficult to conceal and can change visible tone and texture of your skin. Some people even experience sensation of heat or prickling when rosacea symptoms are aggravated.

You may even have a form of the skin condition that affects one part of the face specifically, such as the eyes or the nose. In these cases, patients will notice that the tip of their nose looks enlarged and bulbous, with obvious pores. Rosacea can also make the eyes feel constantly red and irritated. There are a variety of approaches available for treating rosacea and helping control symptoms.

The best way to determine which kind of rosacea you are experiencing is to Request an Appointment with our skin care experts. This is the first step in allowing our dermatologists to create a plan of care that matches your needs.

TREATMENTS FOR ROSACEA AT BRYN MAWR DERMATOLOGY

We offer customized treatments to target signs and symptoms of rosacea, so you can feel great about the way you look and enjoy relief from uncomfortable skin irritation. Your treatment regimen is recommended based on the severity of your condition and your goals. Our dermatologists may suggest any of the following, or a combination of a few of them to work in tandem and minimize rosacea:
Topical Prescriptions

There are an array of both prescription and over-the-counter topical creams designed to help with the symptoms of rosacea. They either focus on helping with the redness caused by inflammation or the little bumps that sometimes form with certain types of rosacea. We have found that the best topical medications include active ingredients that address the multiple causes of rosacea and help quell the variety of symptoms that patients’ experience. That’s why we offer our prescription strength BMD Rosacea Gel in both our Villanova & Collegeville locations. It is a specially compounded formulation that includes Metronidazole (an antibiotic that helps with redness), Ivermectin (a prescription antiparasitic to help with pustular breakouts, Niacinamide (to help with flushing) and PAD (a gentle exfoliating antiseptic).

Laser Skin Care

A significant result of having rosacea is often broken blood vessels on the mid face area. These tiny capillaries can become permanently visible in the areas of the worst flushing caused by rosacea. No topical cream or oral medication can help resolve these symptoms, so in the case of background redness we often recommend a series of laser treatments with the VBeam. This device can quickly abolish persistent flushing on the nose and cheeks.

Prescription Oral Medication
One common oral medication that is prescribed to help with the symptoms of rosacea is Doxycycline, brand name Oracea. This oral antibiotic has proven to be a successful anti-inflammatory medicine that, at very low doses, is a good long-term treatment to help keep the symptoms of rosacea at bay. The dose that is prescribed is subantimicrobial, which means that it does not trigger your body to become resistant to the antibiotic over time, and is safe for long-term use.
Trigger Counseling
Sometimes the best way to avoid rosacea flares is to avoid the external triggers that initiate your body’s inflammatory response. Every individual is different, and what causes their rosacea to become noticeable is unique; however, we have found that there are some common threads. Foods that are spicy, red wine, exertion, heat and sun exposure are all things that can precipitate a rosacea flare. The skin experts at Bryn Mawr Dermatology recommend that you keep a journal for about a month to document your flares and anything you do or consume that may have provoked these intensified rosacea symptoms. And then avoid them.

ROSACEA WE DON’T TREAT

Ocular Rosacea is a type of rosacea that affects the eyelids, tear ducts and the surface of your eye (cornea). The symptoms may include: itchy or stinging eyes, blurred vision, sensitivity to light or a feeling of having a foreign body in the eyes. It is best to seek the care of an eye specialist if you are experiencing this type of rosacea as they can provide you with the most rapid and long-lasting relief.

Just as not all two patients are the same, no two rosacea treatment plans are identical. Some patients may respond better to topical treatments, while others will need the added boost of oral medications. At Bryn Mawr Dermatology, we are flexible and adaptable in our approach to treating rosacea; we find the therapies that will work best for you and boost your confidence.

If you have questions about how our team can alleviate the redness and bumps that accompany rosacea, call our office today for your consultation!
