What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat spider veins. It is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a solution into the affected veins. The solution used in Sclerotherapy can vary, but it typically contains a chemical called polidocanol, Asclera®.   Once the solution is injected, the veins gradually disappear over a period of several weeks to months.

Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment option for those looking to improve the appearance of their legs. At Bryn Mawr Dermatology, we offer Sclerotherapy as a safe and effective treatment for those seeking to improve their symptoms. We use FDA-approved Asclera® to inject the affected veins, which causes them to collapse and fade with time.

How Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Work?

Sclerotherapy is a straightforward and relatively painless procedure. During treatment, a small needle injects a solution into the affected veins. The solution irritates the vein’s lining, causing it to swell and eventually seal shut. Blood is then rerouted through healthier veins, and the treated vein eventually fades away. This helps improve the appearance of the affected areas and reduces associated symptoms. However, you will likely experience some redness or bruising in the treated areas the first few weeks.

Sclerotherapy is typically recommended for individuals with mild varicose or spider veins, as more severe cases may require additional treatment options. Symptoms that may indicate a need for Sclerotherapy include the following:

  • Presence of visible veins (red, blue or purple)
  • Pain or discomfort in the affected areas (legs, feet, ankles etc.)
  • Swelling in affected areas
  • Aching/cramping in the legs

Who is Best Suited for Sclerotherapy?

While Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment, it is not suitable for everyone. It is best suited for individuals with small to medium-sized spider veins or for individuals who are more concerned about the appearance of affected areas.  If you experience extreme pain or discomfort related to your veins or if your veins seem to be bulging from your skin, it is recommended that you refer to a vein specialist. Sclerotherapy is also not recommended for pregnant women or those with a history of deep vein thrombosis or blood clots.

At Bryn Mawr Dermatology, we will assess your medical history and examine your veins to determine if Sclerotherapy is right for you.

How Many Sclerotherapy Sessions Will You Need?

The number of Sclerotherapy sessions required varies depending on the extent of your vein condition. Some patients may see results after just one treatment, while others may require multiple sessions. At Bryn Mawr Dermatology, we will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your needs.

What to do Before and After Sclerotherapy Treatment?

While Sclerotherapy is a relatively simple and uncomplicated treatment method, there are certain things that patients are advised to be mindful of before and after the treatment.

The following are some recommendations for before the Sclerotherapy:

  • Avoid taking any medications that may increase the risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), vitamin E and other blood-thinning drugs at least 5 days before the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising.  Do not discontinue use of these products if they are vital to your health.
  • Avoid sun exposure before the procedure, as that can increase the risk of complications after the procedure.
  • Avoid putting any lotion or cream on the affected area on the day of the procedure.
  • Bring compression stockings or tights along as they help reduce swelling post-procedure.

The following are some recommendations for after the procedure:

  • After the treatment, some small cotton rolls may be taped to your legs. It is advised to leave them in place for up to 24 hours.
  • Wear compression stockings over the treated areas for the first two weeks to improve the procedure’s outcome.
  • Avoid strenuous activities that might result in heavy sweating for the first two weeks.
  • Avoid exposure to the sun for at least six weeks post-treatment, as it can increase hyperpigmentation.
  • Use sunscreen for the first few weeks when going outdoors.
