We could fill a book trying to explain lasers and their individual uses, but to help you get some basic information we’ll be brief. We’ll happily give you all the knowledge we have when you come in to our main line office for your consultation.
Unfortunately there is no laser (yet) that treats “everything.” The everything being a laser treatment that can tighten skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, take away sun damage and some red spots. True, some lasers can do more than others, but sometimes you need multiple treatments to have the results you desire. At Bryn Mawr Dermatology we promise to help guide you and get the right laser for the job!
We now offer one of the best lasers on the market! The CORE Fractional Resurfacing System from Syneron & Candella. The beauty of this laser is in its versatility. Depending on the setting we can deliver a lighter treatment to stimulate collagen production, we can use Mid level to offer a stronger boost in collagen building and we can choose the Fusion level to target optimal cellular regeneration. For example if you have skin that is loose or sagging, acne scars or deep ‘smokers lines’, the Fusion setting will give you a phenomenal result. We are also able to vary the settings if you have multiple concerns to address. The CORE Light treatment will give results and downtime similar to Pixel for those of you who are familiar. The treatment still gives you a collagen boost but only about half the “down time” of the stronger setting. For Core Mid you will want a full week to allow redness, swelling and peeling to subside. Fusion treated areas can look red and swollen for up to two weeks.
There truly is no substitution when it comes to improving the texture of skin. Time and lifestyle cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin in our skin. Yes, creams (Retinon/Tretinoin) and some types of chemical peels can stimulate new collagen, but having laser treatment will give you far the best and strongest results. Botox and fillers can prevent wrinkles and fill depressions but they can’t improve the actual texture of the skin. The “crepey-ness”, ultra fine lines found around the eyes and cheeks, or skin that has begun to sag- these are the perfect reasons to look to laser resurfacing treatments.
You aren’t too young or too old to have laser resurfacing treatments! The CORE laser uses light to create tiny wounds in your skin. The body’s natural response to such a wound is to make brand new collagen. We’re using light to trigger your body to do something natural.
This treatment is done by Dr. Stanko in our Bryn Mawr office. Please call or come by for a consult to find out more details!
The Venus Freeze® features new combination technology of Radio Frequency with magnetic pulses to help reverse the effects of skin aging and laxity. This treatment is perfect for the sagging skin along the jaw line and neck, the loose skin on the upper arms and thighs as well as those of us who may have a little bulge on the hips or abdomen. It can offer an improvement in the appearance of cellulite but what’s really getting attention is the Venus’s ability to tighten and firm the skin. Multiple treatments are required to see the results you desire, but fear not, treatments take only 20 minutes and are very comfortable. We tried it to be sure and it feels like a hot stone massage. Ideally you would do one treatment per week for the recommended number of weeks. During your personal consultation you’ll get a recommendation on the number of treatments necessary to help you. Laser Hair Removal is very popular. You can remove unwanted hair from any surface of your body provided the hairs are dark brown or black. They don’t make a laser yet that will target red, white, blonde or grey hairs. The treatment is relatively quick. You will want to come in every 4–6 weeks for a treatment until the hair is gone. The honest truth is that Laser Hair Removal is not painless. At Bryn Mawr Dermatology we pride ourselves on being honest with our patients about their potential experience. When the laser hits the skin there is a stinging sensation which varies depending on the area and individual pain tolerance. We can apply a topical numbing cream to help this sensation but it will not be eliminated completely. That said, most people find the results to be so worth it that they continue treatments to completion. It is best to shave the area within 24 hours of your appointment and to avoid sun exposure, waxing and epilating 6 weeks prior to treatment and between treatments. Laser Hair Removal is not permanent and you may want a touch up session 1–2 times per year.
IPL, sometimes known as photo–rejuvenation, is a great way to reduce redness in the skin. Depending on the severity of your condition, many sessions may be required. It is a quick procedure and has very little associated downtime. You will likely be more red after treatment for an hour or two. Rosacea is a condition and must be managed. Several treatments per year are best to achieve optimal results.
YAG Laser is the same laser used in Tattoo Removal. This laser targets dark pigment as in ink or dark spots on the skin. This is safe to use on any part of the body including the face and hands where many unwanted dark spots or sunspots appear. The treated spot will become like a scab for up to 7 days and then it will peel off. Occasionally a second treatment is required for optimal results with sunspots, but multiple treatments are usually required with tattoo removal.
